I am Laith, 25 years old, from Iraq, from the city of Diyala, I live in New Baqubah. I have 2 brothers, Omar and Hussam, and I have 2 sisters, Zubaiydah and Yamama. My father’s name is Khalil and my mother’s name is Salma. I was born to an unjust, mentally ill father who was subjected to beatings, mockery, contempt, insults, and various forms of punishment. He forced me to pray, recite daily supplications, and go to the mosque when I was 7 years old, as did my sisters. Whoever refuses to pray will be punished. When I failed mathematics in the third year of middle school, my father called me in front of everyone, brought slippers, and started beating me, saying, “You deceived me and did not study all year.” Then he pulled me towards the stairs and strangled me. I would have taken my last breaths if my mother had not intervened. Then he took me out of the house and started beating me with a water hose until I cried. Then he left me. When I was in the sixth year of middle school, my mother complained to my father about me not going to classes, so my father brought the water hose and beat me randomly all over my body, causing swelling. And I was hurt then and he cursed me in front of everyone. After that, when I finished high school, he forced me to enter the university. On Monday, April 2, 2018, I was returning from the university. After eating lunch and getting some sleep, he called me to perform the Maghrib prayer. After the prayer was over, he called me to his room and locked the door. I found my mother and my brother Hossam sitting there as well. He said to me, “I heard that you are gay and have sex with a friend of yours named Omar.” I said, “No, that’s not true. He is just my friend and we are joking and there is nothing like that between us.” He said to me, “In Islam, this is forbidden and its punishment is slaughter with a sword.” He forced me to open my phone. When I refused, he brought a large piece of wood that looked like a baseball bat to hit me. When I held it, my brother Hossam twisted my arm and my father lay on my back and put me on the bed. He called my mother and said, “Bring the knife. I want to slaughter him.” l agreed and said, “I will open the phone, but don’t do anything.” I opened my phone and he searched all my pictures but found nothing. He took it and punished me by locking me up inside the house for a whole year. He forced me to go to Quran learning courses with my mother. After that, I went to another university and then in 2019 a quarrel happened between me and him and he kicked me out of the house and when I returned he said if you do not pray then you are an infidel and your punishment is death get out of my house or I will kill you after that I left the house and in January 23, Monday 2023. I was going to take an exam at the university after I left students attacked me and punched me in the nose until I bled and no one intervened. and the reason was because I was wearing women's clothes and also out of hatred after this situation I decided to leave lraq. In 2024, he threatened to kill me wherever he finds me. He also informed my relatives that he has disowned me and gave them permission to kill me or harm me if they ever see me.
